Most users (read n00bs on Linux) usually think that they only need to go to Synaptic Package Manager, Mark all Upgrades and then ta-dah!! everything is up-to-date.
Well, you’re wrong dude. I bet that most users are using Firefox 3.5, if you wanna check it by yourself go to the Help Menu > About firefox.

Anyway, the latest stable version of Firefox is 3.6. It’s much easier to add a new repository rather than going to the website, download, unpack, install.. time is precious guys. o__0

Since the Ubuntu fellas won’t update Karmic Koala repos with this release – don’t ask me why this is happening, but I bet that the official Firefox Stable PPA will be added only on Lucid Lynx 10.04 – upcoming Ubuntu Linux.

So here’s the recipe dudes:

1) Open a terminal window
2) Copy and paste the following line:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable ; sudo aptitude update

3) Head to System > Administration > Update Manager (or even Synaptic)
4) If you’re on Firefox 3.5 Update Manager will detect and pop up that there’s a new version available.. and the rest is up to you guys. Next next next next ok ok ok ok.

Be happy 🙂
There’s no need to waste time downloading and installing all your appz manually if you can add a new repo.

It’s always good to check if there’s an official PPA of your fav appz and add them using Terminal or GUI (software packages option).

Happy b-day again Mary =p

Guess it’s time to get my ass glued on a chair. Hopefully everything will be okay after I go through all those tests, visa, passports, taxes, + more..
I can’t predict the future but I can make it happen. 🙂 Never give up.

Just received some books today to get back in time and REstart my Computer Science course – yup, that one I gave up on mid 2005. Guess it’s better to admit that sometimes you have to stop fooling around and do something for real.

Passing the GRE, finding a new crib, pay all those shit taxes, complete all job tasks and sometimes eat and survive.
It’s a brand new world and there’s like tons of opportunities. Guess it’s normal to feel confused, lost, desperate.
It’s not a monster or something like that, it’s my life. I miss a lotta things – that’s the price you gotta pay for your choices.

Let’s see what will happen next.

..and here you are – these are my kiddos (there’s 3 more books – 2 Tivoli Maximo bibles + 1 ITIL v3 cert pack – just couldn’t find it under the bed, under the sofa, under the table, nowhere, hahaahahahahhah):

..and this is my Friday Pack:
1) Watch ‘I love you Phillip Morris’ – yay! I’m just CRAZY to see this movie starring Jim Carrey and Rodrigo Santoro, hahaha. Awesome. Check the trailer on Youtube when you can! It worth the laugh!
2) Just found a nice app to replace my old habits – read ConvertXtoDVD – since I’m running Karmic and I don’t feel like using Wine to run Windows appz, I’ve just started googling around for alternative open source appz. This one is called DeVeDe – it’s user friendly and works fine. Just an apt-get install devede and you’re done 😉

note: of course I couldn’t avoid buying another Blu-Ray. There’s like nowhere to place more dvds, blu-rays, comics, etc., and I keep buying piles and piles. =p (yeah, I’m still struggling with my old Windows based database of Comics, Books, Dvds, MP3, Software and Games. I’m fucked. I’m trying to import it to a Linux based DB to sync it w the web and integrate an iPhone app to add or just to double check if you have that DVD or Book to avoid buying duplicated stuff (heh heh, bad memo here). Since I gotta start studying the pile of the previous pic I won’t be able to dedicate the time I would like to learn about development of iPhone appz. At most I will have to jailbreak my phone again and start from scratch =p

3) And ta-dah! I’ve finally figured out how to make my X-Fi Fatal1ty Xtreme to work smooth w surround + logitech Cinema Z + Creative HS 800 Fatal1ty headset – dude, I can’t believe it’s working. Hhahahahahahah. I’ll try to write about my bizarre solution (mebbe workaround) to fix this issue. Skype is running smoothhhh! Voice + Cam. Can’t believe it. 🙂

4) One more post ahead: how to connect and sync your mobile phone/keyboard and mice w Karmic? (Hope to finish this draft till early April)

Well, gotta move my ass for a movie now and I will probably fall asleep on the sofa.

Simple and short post. More personal than ever. Have a nice weekend everybody. 🙂

aaaaaah!!!! one more thing :: Check this vid out. Nice tune. Love the band. ❤

“I don’t wanna come back down from this cloud
Taken me all this time to find out what I need”

Recently I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Karmic and tested another cam solution provided by the Ubuntu team for skype+camera+msn, etc..
It didn’t work for me. So if someone try out this solution and it works fine please let me know.

This is a REAL interesting article by Ubuntu.org too. I’ll try to keep this post updated with new links and interesting stuff.

1) Switching from Windows

2) Ubuntu equivalents to Windows Programs

Yeah, it would be piece of cake to use Synaptic for sucha task. But let’s give a try for Shell.

I’m running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, so here’s the recipe:

sudo aptitude show <app name> - eg.: sudo aptitude show samba

this is my output:

Package: samba

Description: SMB/CIFS file, print, and login server for Unix
Samba is an implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol for Unix systems, providing
support for cross-platform file and printer sharing with Microsoft Windows, OS
X, and other Unix systems.  Samba can also function as an NT4-style domain
controller, and can integrate with both NT4 domains and Active Directory realms
as a member server.

This package provides the components necessary to use Samba as a stand-alone
file and print server.  For use in an NT4 domain or Active Directory realm, you
will also need the winbind package.

This package is not required for connecting to existing SMB/CIFS servers (see
smbclient) or for mounting remote filesystems (see smbfs).

The output is very detailed and may give you extra time for a coffee 😉

dpkg -l | grep <app name> - eg.: dpkg -l | grep samba

Follow my output:

ii  samba-common                                             2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.4                          common files used by both the Samba server and
ii  samba-common-bin                                         2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.4                          common files used by both the Samba server and

this output show us that ONLY the common files are installed (ii means installed), but not Samba itself.

Now it’s your turn to choose what is best for ya. 🙂

That’s it. Just a simple tip.
